Synonym: 1,2,3-propanetriol, glycerol
For food, cosmetic and chemical-technical applications.
Application
Glycerin, originally obtained as a cleavage product in the splitting of oils and fats, is now obtained on a large scale in the production of methyl esters as part of the production of sustainable fuels. There it is produced as a by-product, which is refined in further refining and purification processes to glycerin according to the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.) . Glycerin is used in a wide range of applications because its product properties offer a broad spectrum of possible uses. Due to its water binding and moisture retaining properties it is used in cosmetics such as lotions, creams or as a formulation ingredient of hand disinfectants and serves as a base for skin and leather care in general. In addition, due to its slightly sweet taste (hence its old name: oil sweet), it is used in the field of nutritional supplements, e.g. in dietary products or in pharmaceutical applications, as well as part of the base for e-liquids (e-cigarettes). With its low-temperature properties, it serves as a powerful antifreeze in both technical and food applications. This is because glycerin is even approved as a food additive E422 in the EU. With more than 800 possible applications - from lubricants to foodstuffs - glycerin is one of the most important products in the oleo-chemical industry.
Precautions
Wash hands and other exposed body parts with mild soap and water before eating, drinking or smoking and when leaving the workplace. Provide process area with good ventilation to prevent formation of vapors.

Additional Information
Glycerin is not an oil, but a polyhydric alcohol. It can be produced today by a variety of routes. Even through the synthesis of propane accordingly as a petroleum-based product. By far the largest amount is contributed by the production of biogenic fuels. The industrial history of glycerin dates back to 1779, when it was discovered during the splitting of fats.
Storage
Store only in the original container in a cool, well-ventilated area. Keep container closed when not in use. Avoid direct exposure to sunlight.
